FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) about Visiting Artists Program

What is the visiting artist program?
Blake Street Shops and Studios is a venue that encourages artists to temporarily showcase their fabulous work in a few of our designated public spaces.

What kinds of artists are you looking for?
Primarily visual artists who can hang their 2D artwork on walls. Also, we ask that the artist has a common thread that ties her/his work in the series.

At this time, we cannot include jewelry, or other small treasures.

What if I have a group exhibit idea?
If your idea involves more than one person, we will definitely consider the application. These are shows that include the work of several artists, a show based on a theme, a group or association show.

How long is show?
Typically, shows run one month or slightly less. Guest artists are invited to hang their own shows  the week prior to the First Friday of each month and removed the week prior to the First Friday of the following month.

Where are the designated public spaces?
We have two common areas with multiple wallspace of various sizes, in addition to any unrented artist studio spaces.

What are the amenities for the visiting artist?

  1. First Friday: The visiting artist scores this coveted scene. Blake Street Shops and Studios are a packed scenario that brims with current and new customers. This is an opportunity for you to meet and greet your new fans.
  2. Web Site: A permanent link featuring you & your work on our web site- including photos and your profile.
  3. Facebook: An guest artist posting of your name and dates of your show on our face book page.
  4. Plus, event postings in IndyWeek and others
  5. We host a First Friday reception featuring guest musicians as well as wine and cheese refreshments.
  6. Use of the studio space during the entire month of your visit with us.
  7. Visibility and access to clients both local and out of town as we get many visitors to the popular Historic City Market destination in downtown Raleigh.

What are the conditions of hanging in the available studios?
The available studio(s) are vacant until a creative entrepreneur (permanent tenant) signs a lease to rent the space for her own shop. Artists may rent the available studios either as solo artists or a  group of artist. The work should show a cohesiveness in theme or media.

What does this mean for me, the visiting artist?
In the event a permanent tenant signs a lease on a space where you were planning to hang- we will find you another month and time to hang. If that arrangement won’t work for you, then we’ll fully refund you your fee.

What is the pricing structure for a visiting artist?
Pricing ranges from $200.00-$400.00 per available room, per month,  which is half the monthly rental for a permanent tenant, and $200.00-$300.00 for the featured spaces in the  open Commons Areas of the studios. We take NO commission on any work that you sell!  And we hope you sell a bunch!
